Pre-design Condition:

Historic property located on Cockatoo Island.

Requirements:

  • Design a new hospitality venue for the hospitality group The Mulberry Group

  • Deliver a unique point of difference to the group's venues

  • Create an emotive experience reflecting the brand values

Concept and Features:

Ocean Floor is located on Cockatoo Island, looking at views over Sydney Harbour. Infused with rich textures of the rubble sandstone masonry feature wall across from the entrance leading to the bar area.

The travertine marble bar with warm LED lighting has a luxurious feel for patrons to enjoy. The interior takes its inspiration from the surrounding ocean, with real oceanic objects adorning the interior. Deep green leather covers the custom-made booth seating and bar stools. The roof has textured lined laminate panels to conceal electrical, and industrial elements. The panels are placed together in a zig-zag pattern to represent the sand and add an acoustic element. There is a calming balance between layered, raw, textured, soft and hard materials with neutral colour throughout the space.

With an open floor plan, patrons can sit, stand or walk freely around for a constantly flowing environment. The staff can access the bar from two convenient access points to move between the entrance and commercial kitchen. The venue has a large outdoor area with herb gardens to reflect the brand’s commitment to sustainability and their ethos of seeking locally sourced ingredients for food and beverages. Outside features a timber shade structure over the outdoor dining area. Ocean Floor is designed to provide a contemporary and modern space where patrons can enjoy the surroundings of Sydney in a welcoming place.
